  6. Dave is absolutely correct. Medical students don't start making any real money until we are about thirty. Once that money starts coming in you feel like you deserve the finer things. It is hard to continue to delay gratification when now you are capable of buying that nice house or car. I wish I had been more disciplined because these loans have hung around a lot longer than they should have. I just gave advice to some of the residents that I know. I told them to keep living like a resident until that debt is paid off or they are going to regret it. I could tell that my advice went in one ear and out the other. They are already dreaming about the Lexus and fancy house.

  10. If I were in his situation, I would move back home with my parents & rent out the mortgage.

The mortgage would be paying itself (or at least most of it with a renter).

I would pay off the Lexus completely within 3 months & then sell it before it depreciates even more. Use the $400 lease to get to work

Use the $100K in savings towards the student loans. Now the debt is $209,000.

Save whatever is made out of the sold Lexus for emergencies.

Now that the mortgage is out the way & an expensive car was sold, & hes able to easily save $6000 a month >>> he needs to send those $6000 towards the loans every month for 3 years & be done with it.

I stayed with my parents after college & paid my loans in 3 years. Now im free. This is the only way to do it if you're in this kind of debt like the caller. Good Luck!

  12. I just love how people call in with debt "problems" yet they make 260k a year. Stop calling Dave about your "problems". He can be completely debt free in 2 years (2.5 tops) and he knows it.

  17. As a veterinarian, this cracks me up. I graduated with a lot of debt as well (current vet school average is ~200k), but I can't even imagine making that kind off money! They are making a big point about how difficult it is to pay off the debt, but the average starting salary for vets is between $60-80k in the US. I think we were trained in school to expect to be and live as if you are poor.

  20. He’s either a troll or a doctor that chose a specialty that doesn’t pay a lot or he went to a Caribbean medical school and didn’t match or he was greedy and took out more money than he needed.

If he went into surgery he could pay this back easily in 2.5 years. Anything else would be hard.

  24. Hold on a second, what if the return on an investment is higher than the interest accrued on his loans? Let your money work for you and make minimum payments on the student loans. Are there no low risk investments with a 12-15% return?
