  2. I think that customers are moving up from a non premium car on the basis that Model S cars proved to be reliable so I think some lower earning customers will keep these cars 10 years and justify the price with the fuel/electricity savings.

  4. Great effort Tesla's part! Wish then all the best. The one thing I don't agree with is the hype around them selling more than all other premium brand. Tesla has the advantage of two years of preorders. We should wait until those orders are met and then compare.

    They already have stores inside the mall.
    They have the technology and batteries, and if they deploy the star link they will have their own Internet service for the cars in the smart phone.
    Doesn’t apple make like 80% of their money from their smart phones?

  22. Big Thanks Ben! I watched on Tesla's site and missed the first half but could not get to the begining of the video on Tesla's site right after the call, you are the first video i found on youtube to catch the part i missed. Next time i'll simply join your channel for the call.

    If I understood correctly:

    ■ the autopilot computer hardware is made by Tesla itself. (which might be what Munro was refering to when mentioning something to the effect that the electronics of M3 was next level)
    ■ some of the designers that will be working on model Y were in the factory to help with M3 production issues and will have gained insight into creating designs that are easier to produce.

    im very impressed by Tesla's ability to mobilize people with various backgrounds and from different parts of the company, and expand their pool of sources of ideas and perspectives to problem solving outside the people that are in the specific department/area where solutions are required, imo this really helps improve innovation, cooperation and synergy, and is extremely rare in large companies or bureaucratic organizations.

    Finally, the top 5 trade-in data could indicate that the 36k (colour) versions and used M3 (in a couple of years) will be selling like hotcakes!

  25. Great video as always but honest feedback, audio quality has suffered despite your upgrade. Lots of stuttering in the audio and not super clear. It almost sounds like a bandwidth issue or something similar is causing the audio to repeatedly buffer. Good luck in finding the root cause and keep up the great videos.

  28. Clearly, the early purchase of all the flexible robots means that investment is reused with a software change on a different part of the line. Flexibility allows easy repurposing of failed line designs. Production tooling with special purpose robots or equipment will lower costs further, freeing up flexible robots again. Obviously, management failed to design the lines for high production in the first place, although they tried. Utilizing sunk cost multi-purpose machinery will allow swift changes, allowing improvements more or less continuously. Flexibility always costs more than special-purpose equipment, but obviously, if special-purpose equipment fails for some reason, that becomes useless waste. Tesla has avoided such useless waste, but at the cost of lost opportunity costs, slow deliveries. The problem was difficult, but with experienced employees, it should have been doable. Sadly the long ramp-ups of Detroit weren't feasible competitively.
    A lot of the real problem is novelty. Electric cars are strange and the first people to do this were always going to run into inefficiencies getting started. A lot of motor-manufacturing capability was already well automated, but other areas must have been problematic.

    Theoretically, battery to electric motor cars are always going to cost much, much less than fossil fuel engines/transmissions/etc. Tesla's openness to new ideas may be great for sales, but that mental flexibility is also costly. Keeping complexity in software will allow dramatic and increasing efficiencies longer term. Musk's recognition of this is important and suggests that investments in that area will meet large returns. The future of Tesla is so bright, we all gotta wear shades.

  29. Best part of the talk for long term investors is the 3 guys Elon brought in for a chat about what they're working on. They're essentially talking about the capacity for Tesla to start attempting to not only tackle the car market but also tackle the transportation network as a whole. From home to anywhere in the world in a couple hours is potentially possible in less than 20 years. From home to the other side of the world and back home in half a day. Could be possible.
